The idea of building a model of the Solar system starts as a school project at ISU, after realizing that most times the representation of the Solar system fails to demonstrate the huge distances between the objects, since different scales are used for the Sun/planet sizes, and the distances between them.

In this project, the same scale is used for the representation. It all starts by defining the Sun as a sphere of one meter diameter, placed at ISU...

THE PROJECT

The Sun and its planets

The Solar system is composed by the Sun and its planets. In many images it is shown using different scales for sizes and distances, creating a false view. This project will use the same scale, with results maybe surprising.

The scale

The project starts with a Sun represented by a sphere of one metre diameter. This sets the scale for the whole representation of the Solar system.

The distances

The full size of the Solar system is around 3 km at the scale of our project, where the Sun is a sphere of 1 meter diameter.

The sizes

The scale set in this project has as a consequence that the planes become really small. Jupiter, the largest of the planets in the Solar system, becomes a sphere of only 10 cm diameter.
