Project presentation at International School Utrecht.

WELCOME

This is the official website of the MODEL OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM project, developed by Arnau Colomer-Bondia at International School Utrecht (ISU).

In creating a MODEL SCALE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, using the same scale for the distances (between the sun and the different planets) and for the sizes (of such planets and the sun) will give us more accurate results and so a more interesting project. My aim is to make people aware of the huge distances in the universe as well as creating a new initiative in Utrecht.
In primary and secondary schools, students learn basic information about the different planets of the Solar System: their names, colors, compositions (rocky or gaseous) sizes and distances. All these factors are learned by the students without deep research on the subject. Years later, when they are no longer studying, these students do not realize the immense distances and sizes that exist in the Universe.
In this way, if the diameter of the Sun, instead of being 1.4 million kilometers, is represented by a sphere of 1 meter, the diameter of the Earth is that of a 10-cents coin (10 millimeters).
This project is distributed over the whole city of Utrecht. I have chosen representative places in the city to put my planets. In each of those places, I have put my planet on its plaque (see the plaques in "PLANET DATA").
Global context: Scientific and technical innovation:
From the five global contexts, I decided to guide/make my project a scientific and technical innovation to the city of Utrecht and so to The Netherlands. After researching through the network for similar initiatives made in Utrecht, I did not find anything alike.
My project "explores the natural world; the interaction between people and the natural world and how humans use their understanding of scientific principles."
The accurate knowledge covers all these objectives.

The experiences lived while during this project, are what makes it personal. During the creation of it, I visited a lot of places all over Utrecht that I probably would have never visited if it was not because of the project. I could visit the different neighborhoods of the city and see how citizens live depending on their economic status. Also, at the time of creating the different planets, I had to search all the sizes and distances as well as their composition. I learned a lot of information thanks to this project.
